Jailed man 'posed a real risk to life'

8:40am Saturday 20th March 2010

A MAN who was caught on CCTV smashing a glass bottle to use it as a weapon, after a row with Penarth club doormen, was jailed by Barry magistrates last week.

The court heard how 28-year-old Jonathan Cole, from Riverside in Cardiff, had an altercation with doormen outside the Eclipse nightclub in Penarth on December 11, 2009.

Instead of walking away, he went to an alley off Glebe Street, where CCTV showed him smashing a bottle on the floor.

Prosecuting, Jessica Element said: "He held it down like a backwards-facing dagger ready to attack, but then was seen to return to the St Fagans Pub on Glebe Street."

Police later found the glass near where he had been sitting, and Cole pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon.

Sentencing him, District Judge Richard Williams said: "You armed yourself with a glass bottle, and whilst it’s true that you had a change of heart, the fact is you posed a real risk to life to those you were targeting.

"You had the glass with the purpose of causing injury."

Cole was jailed for 128 days.
