GPG green award goes to Penarth jewellers Rowleys

GWYRDDIO Penarth Greening (GPG) is delighted to announce that Rowley’s the Jewellers is the first winner of its green award for 2012.

"There are several reasons why Rowley’s was nominated," said GPG chair Tricia Griffiths.

"Above all, it is a family business that has been serving Penarth for nearly 50 years, and we like its ethical approach to trading.

"Many people are unaware of where much of what they buy comes from. But Rowley’s tries, where possible, to source from ethical and fair-trading partnerships.

"They also work with British manufacturers and stock locally produced jewellery and gifts.

"We were also impressed by the way Rowley’s provided space for an exhibition by the newly formed ‘Made in Penarth’ group, which is encouraging local people to buy goods made and sold locally."

She added that GPG was also pleased by the way co-owner Petra Aydin Barberini had supported many of their initiatives over the last year – particularly the Shop in Penarth (SiP) project.

Speaking about SiP, Petra said: "Penarth is lucky to have a group like GPG supporting the local traders, and more importantly bringing local traders together with their tireless volunteers visiting up to 50 businesses.

"They have a positive 'can-do' attitude and infectious enthusiasm, helping us all to keep Penarth a pleasant and green town."

GPG re-launched its SiP scheme in December with 50 retailers, a new leaflet which shows where the SiP shops are situated, and a voucher scheme.

They are delighted with the way cards are selling, and looking out for one of the £10 vouchers is proving a good way of reminding people to use their SiP cards regularly.

At the beginning of each month five vouchers are distributed at random among the SiP shops, and the first person using their card in one of the chosen shops, wins – easy and fun! For more information about SiP and the offers, visit www.gpgpenarth.org.uk or phone 029 2070 7828.
